"Do you believe what goes around comes around?"

I’ll always remember the first time I threw a boomerang. I wasn’t really sure it would work at first. I mean I had seen them on TV, but never really thrown one before. I just flung it out there rather gently at first. And just "as seen on TV," it came back.

So I decided to throw it again, only a little harder this time. The boomerang went out further and higher, but it still came back to me and a little harder.

Well, of course, there was nothing else for me to do but to fling it really hard this time. The boomerang sailed way out, hung in the blue clear sky, and began its rapid descent towards me, at the same speed I had pitched it with. In fact, it was coming back so fast that I got out of the way for fear it would break my hand.
You know, life is like that boomerang. What goes around, comes around. And usually with the same effort and energy you put into it.

So be careful what you throw and how you throw it as you listen to life and make a life, not just a living today.

"Do you see what you’re looking for?"

One of our daughters had a friend coming over to visit. Her friend visits us regularly when she’s home from college so she’s been in our home lots of times.

We heard her drive up and anticipated her coming in. She’s such a regular at our home that we didn’t get up to open the door for her. It was already open anyway. At least we didn’t get up right away…

…the next sound we heard was that loud "Boom!" I got up and ran into the kitchen where I found her, standing just inside the door, holding her knee. And I said, "Sweetheart, what happened?"

And she said, "I ran into the glass door. I wasn’t looking for it so I didn’t see it."

We all laughed and a lot once we found out she was okay. But she was right about one thing—you see what you’re looking for. And if you’re not looking for it, you don’t see it. For instance, if you’re looking for the good things happening to you, you see them. If not, you don’t.

Today ask God to help you see those good things as you make a life.

"Isn't God good?"

Last month I faced a very difficult situation. Cody, one of our yellow Labs, was in bad health, so bad that our vet recommended that we say good-bye to the ole boy and put him to sleep. Now I know you may not understand this, but Cody was like a member of our family. I decided that day to put him out of his misery.

That very same day, someone who listens to life with us through our website at www.listentolife.org sent me an email saying how she starts every day with Today’s Story. She’s a dog lover, also and told me all about her Sheltie who greets her enthusiastically after work and shows her the beauty of God’s world as they walk. She included a story written by a vet who had to put a family’s dog down. Someone in the family asked why dogs live shorter lives than we do. Their four-year-old son said, "People are born so that they can learn to live a good life. Dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long."

That was Cody. He lived a good life. God knew I needed to read that story on that day. Isn’t God good?

"Got Skittles?"

I recently placed an order for CD cases with a supply house. I’ve never ordered from them before, but they had the best pricing on it so I decided to give them a try. Well, the cases arrived in just a few days so the shipping was prompt. The cases were exactly what I wanted and the pricing was fantastic.

But the really interesting part was what the supply house included in the packaging. I’m accustomed to getting ink pens and samples of other products, but this was different. They included a coupon for 100 free CDs with my next order and…a bag of Skittles.

I started thinking, "Wouldn’t life be a lot better for all of us if we got Skittles with every order?" I mean just think about it. Your car mechanic’s bill is handed to you with a bag of Skittles. You smile and pay. Your doctor gives you a physical and with it a bag of Skittles. You feel better. Your dry cleaner’s presses your dress and with it comes a bag of Skittles. You feel prettier.

I’m thinking that most of life would be easier to listen to with a bag of Skittles. Thank God for Skittles today!

"What will you draw on your blank page of today?"

The teacher of a three-year-old class asked each of the students to draw a picture of a snowman using just crayons, a blank piece of paper, and their imagination. Looking at the pictures, you’d never be able to guess what they were supposed to be and just glancing at the pictures they all looked about the same.

But under the pictures, the teacher wrote what each of the children said when asked to describe their picture. She hung them up on the hallway wall for everyone to see. Caroline said, "This is my snowman, me and my mommy making a snowman…why are you asking me this?" Vivian said, "This is a spider web. I don’t know how to draw a snowman. I will learn when I am bigger." And you’ve just got to love George and his picture. George drew three scribbled lines on his paper. When the teacher asked him to describe it, George said: "I don’t want to draw a snowman…I want to dance!"

Today, you’ll wonder why, or be asked to do something you can’t, or don’t want to do. Have fun…and dance if you get the chance as you make a life!
