"Do you ever get lost?"

I traveled to a speaking engagement out of town. I printed out my directions from the group’s website, provided by one of those map websites. I made it to the city just fine, but quickly discovered that the mileage on the map was way off; so off in fact, that I pretty soon had no idea where I was.

So I just followed my nose a bit and then did what we men find incredibly challenging—stopped and asked directions. And to top it off—asked directions from a woman. And not just a woman. A car full of women.

They were so kind. "Oh sir, you’re not that far off," one of them said. And the driver gave me most excellent directions, which I repeated back to her to make sure I understood. I got them correct and she said, "You’re handsome and smart." "And very grateful for your help, ladies," I replied.

Some time during this month, you may get lost. You know, forget where you are in the midst of all the busyness. Or, why you’re buying presents or going to parties. When you do, just stop and ask God for directions to the meaning in this season. You may not be that far off, as you listen to life and make a life.

"Where is your fortune?"

I heard last month about someone mailing an absentee ballot to the Broward County, Florida Election Board with a rare and expensive stamp on it. The famous "Inverted Jenny" stamp features a World War I-era airplane on it erroneously printed upside down. Its appraised value is about $200,000.

The solution sounds simple enough—return it to the sender, right? Well, the envelope is in a box that by law can’t be opened. Plus the envelope has no return address on it.

An anonymous fortune locked in a box isn’t worth much to anyone, is it?

Do you have a fortune locked inside of you? You see, out of over 6 billion people here on this planet, there’s only one you. That makes you uniquely created, one-of-a-kind; a valuable fortune. But if you’re locking your gifts inside of your spirit, remaining anonymous, you’re not worth much to anyone, are you?

Today, unlock the valuable fortune of who you are and share your gifts with the world. God made you one-of-a-kind so you can listen to life and make a life, not just a living.

"Are you kind?"

The holidays are a time of exciting busyness and fun activity for lots of us. But also this season is a sad time of year for some people, especially those who have lost a loved one.

You’ve heard me talk before about our yellow Labs that we raise and also about Maxie, our beagle who’s our farm mascot. Well, Maxie was involved in an accident recently and died. As my neighbor said, "Unless you’ve been there, you just don’t understand how attached you get to an animal. They’re a member of the family." And that’s what Maxie was with us—a member of the family.

I buried her up on the mountain on a rainy Wednesday morning while my wife and I cried together. Our younger daughter cried her way to school that day. And I talked with our daughter in London and we cried together, too.

If you’ve been there, you know it’s not easy to say good-bye to someone you love—person or pet, especially during the holidays. Be sensitive to what those missing a loved one are going through as God gives you the opportunity. Be kind to them as you listen to life and make a life today.

"Is your life whoopee?"

I listen to life every chance I can, discovering God in all sorts of ways. I recently learned 10 things about life from a whoopee cushion. They are:

1. It’s important to break the tension before the tension breaks you.

2. Live so you enjoy life. Have more fun!

3. There’s only so much fun a person can enjoy at one time.

4. It’s always funnier when something happens to someone else.

5. Remember—it can happen to you, too.

6. Just when you start to take yourself a little too seriously, something happens to let a little air out of your ego.

7. An imitation is never as good as the real thing. Be authentic.

8. Your face usually says it all.

9. How you react is a great predictor of how you will act.

10. Just because you hear it, doesn’t mean it’s true!

"Are you making a difference?"

Last month I told you a story about my doing an interview with a Detroit area radio station and how the announcers did the weather forecast just before I came on the air. The forecast called for a chance of snow. The Tigers were playing in the World Series at the time and so I asked one of the announcers if the Tigers were going to win the series in the snow. He said, "The only difference between rain and snow is about one degree." I encouraged you to do a little thing that makes a big difference.

I got a lot of great email about that story. One person wrote from a major university and said, "Here’s one little thing I can do. I can thank you for making me take a minute to realize I can make a difference and that changes everything.

"Thank you for your words, Dr. Joey. Although some people may delete this and some time ago I almost unsubscribed, I thank you for the priceless words to live by and I’m thankful I’m alive and in my right faculties to receive them."

See what I mean? Ask God to show you one little thing to do today.
