"Are you outrunning your headlights?"

I listened as a State Policeman described an accident. The driver was traveling way too fast one night and missed a curve, that is, literally didn’t see the curve, and drove straight through it.

I asked, "What do you mean he missed the curve? Do you mean he didn’t turn his wheels enough to make the curve?"

"No," the officer said. "He literally missed the curve. He was speeding so fast that he didn’t see the curve. It was night and his headlights didn’t light up the curve soon enough for him to react and turn his wheels. He outran his headlights."

I know life is very fast-paced today. That you’re probably asked to do more than one person possibly could in a work day. Or, that your family heads off in six different directions at once. Before all of this high-speed living wears you out, before you outrun your headlights, slow down some today. Just say "No" to something and sit down with your family or a friend and enjoy a few minutes of listening to life so you can make a life, not just a living the way God intends.

"How’s your pace?"

As I travel and speak to business groups and associations, one of the most common questions I get is, "How do you write all of those stories?" These stories are on the radio and in newspapers across the U.S. and on our website which reaches hundreds of thousands of people in some 50 countries.

My usual response is something like, "Well, I listen to my life and that’s where the stories come from." Then lots of times there’s a follow-up question: "But how do you write so many?" And that’s a fair question since I write about 260 or so a year.

I always answer, "I write them one at a time."

You see, if I sat down in front of my blank computer screen with that constantly blinking cursor staring at me, and said, "I’ve got to write 260 stories" I’d never write the first one. I’d be paralyzed, frozen, by such a daunting task.

But just about everyday something happens around me and I jot myself a note about it. Later I sit down and write about that experience and it becomes a story.

Today, just listen to life for your story so you will make a life, not just a living.

"Do you love cookies?"

Finally, somebody created a theme for a month that I can truly celebrate. This month is National Cookie Month.

What’s not to love about cookies? I mean they come in all sizes from mini’s to humongous, birthday cake sized cookies. There are all sorts of flavors—oatmeal raisin (my favorite), chocolate chip, macadamia nut, peanut butter, macaroon, pecan, walnut, gingerbread, lemon, chocolate with crème filling, chocolate with peanut butter filling, chocolate with mint filling, and…I’m getting hungry so I’d better stop. And don’t start talking about how fattening they are because there are no-sugar, low-fat, cookies, too. Why, there’s even a Cookie Monster!

Cookies are kind of like people. There are all sorts and sizes and shapes. And no two are exactly alike. Sure, you prefer some over others, but you still love them, right?

The next time you hear yourself starting to judge, criticize or accuse another person, think "cookie" and listen to your life today for what God has to say.
