"What do you forget?"

An elderly couple was watching TV. The husband got up and said to his wife, “I’m going to get some ice cream. Would you like some?”

“Yes, but I’ll get up and fix it myself,” she said. “You never remember how I like it. Your memory’s failing.”

“I can fix it,” he said. “Just tell me how you want it.”

She said, “Okay, I want vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and a cherry on top. Don’t forget the cherry! You always forget the cherry.”

A few minutes later, the husband came back in the room with a sandwich and handed it to her. She looked down at the sandwich, then looked up at her husband, and said, “Where’s the pickle? You always forget the pickle.”

Do you ever just forget? I guess we all just forget sometimes, don’t we?

Do you ever just forget how much God loves you? And that God is with you in all the circumstances of your life whether you’re learning to walk, running around, a know-it-all adolescent, a midlife crisis adult, or just trying to remember a food order? Remember this one thing as you make a life today: God loves you!

"How well do you listen before you try to fix something?"

A store manager overheard a clerk say to a customer, "No, ma'am, we haven't had any for some weeks now, and it doesn't look as if we'll be getting any soon."

Alarmed by what the clerk said, the manager rushed over to the customer who was walking out the door and said, "That isn't true, ma'am. Of course, we'll have some soon. In fact, we placed an order for it a couple of weeks ago."
Then the manager drew the clerk aside and angrily said, "Never, never, never, never say we don't have something. If we don't have it, say we ordered it and it's on its way. Do you understand?”

“Why, yes sir,” the clerk said.

And the manager said, “Now, what was it she wanted?"

The clerk smiled and said, "Rain."Sometimes we just don’t listen, do we? We rush in to fix something or someone before we really know what’s going on. Before you rush in and take over, listen to life today for what God has to say.

"What kind of birthday present to you give someone you love?"

So what did you give your loved one for her or his last birthday? Was it the usual shirt and tie or blouse and jewelry?

Then you need to hear Richard Pharo’s story. He turned 70 earlier this year and guess what his wife, Loretta, gave him for his birthday present? You’ll never guess, but Richard Pharo may be the only person who would truly appreciate this gift. The Pharos live in Boston and Loretta gave Richard an all-expenses paid trip to the duct tape factory in Hickory, North Carolina.

Richard loved it! He’s always been fascinated by duct tape. Seeing how it was made was a real treat for him. He learned that “duck tape” was invented during World War II to seal metal ammunition containers for the U.S. Army. He watched as the tape was made 60 inches wide, and 2,000-yard long per bundle and then cut into 2-inch by 60 yard strips and rolled. Loretta Pharo knows her husband well, doesn’t she? God knows you that well, too, and gives you presents daily that are personally selected for you. So celebrate today!

"What kind of day did you choose for today to be?"

A 92-year-old lady moved to a nursing home. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away. After waiting patiently in the lobby for a long time, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready.

As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, the administrator described the tiny room. "I love it!” she said.

"But Mrs. Jones,” her guide said, “you haven't seen the room."

"That doesn't have anything to do with it," she said. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged, it's how I arrange my mind. I already love it. It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice—I can spend the day in bed naming the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away, just for this time in my life.”

"What are you learning?"

You can learn something new every day. Want to know what I’ve been learning lately?

I’m learning that everyone I meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I’m learning that God didn’t do it all in one day so what makes me think that I can?

I’m learning that underneath another person’s hard shell is someone who wants to be loved and appreciated.

I’m learning to be glad that God doesn’t give me everything I ask for.

I’m learning that opportunities are never lost. Someone will take the ones I miss so I should leave a few lying around.

I’m learning that a lot of people want to live on the mountaintop, but most of my personal growth happens while I’m climbing the mountain.

I’m learning to keep my words soft and tender because I may have to eat them later.

And finally, I’m learning to listen to life and make a life, not just a living.

You can learn something new every day. What are you learning?
