"Are you stuck to God?"

I don’t have to tell you how challenging the job market is right now. I hadn’t really thought about how the scarcity of jobs affects college students until just recently. A coed about to graduate in May is really stressing out about what she’s going to do when she graduates. She’s completed dozens of applications, called just about anyone that she can network with in her chosen field, and still no job. You can imagine her feelings of no control, of helplessness, of being alone in all of this.

But then she had an experience recently that rearranged her totally. In a worship experience, she watched a video about how your DNA is held together with a unique, sticky stuff that’s found no where else. This showed her how much God cared about her, even down to her DNA.

From that moment, she says, she knew God is on the job with her, helping her find “the job;” converging resources, and doing it all out of love for her.

Like my friend, remember you’re not alone or helpless. God is with you today and every day as you
make a life and a living.

"Do you plan life?"

I coach people to succeed in life. Now the definition of success is different for different people. For a couple trying to Stay Married Forever (www.StayMarriedForever.org) that might mean going a night without an argument. For a business person, it might mean making more money while spending more time with the family. For a stressed student it might mean relaxing for a weekend without worrying. For someone miserable at work, it might mean discovering a life passion.

Regardless of what success goal the person is striving toward, I typically hear one common theme along the journey: “That wasn’t supposed to happen!”

Rarely does life turn out exactly like you thought it would. Recovering from these “That wasn’t supposed to happen!” experiences, these reminders that “Life isn’t fair” is a key to success. Do you stay down? Or, do you get up and go?

God can help you deal with whatever life brings you, planned for or not. And nothing that happens to you or around you can separate you from God’s love. So as you make a life today, ask God for help…and then take it!

"What's your grain?"

A friend of mine makes beautiful things out of wood. Now he can create furniture or build houses or decks or lay flooring.

He came to our home not so long ago to lay some flooring for us, but this wasn’t just any flooring. It’s some antique heart pine flooring. As he laid the flooring, he pointed out several things to me.

Like the grain of the wood. How the person who cut it knew just how the grain ran in this wood and so he milled it to run with the grain. Then sanded it just enough to bring out the beautiful grain. “Follow the grain,” my friend said, “and you find the real beauty in this wood.”

When he said that, I began to listen to life. You have a grain within you, just like this wood. Your grain runs a certain way and it’s different from anyone else’s. Life sands on you a bit along the years, rubbing you this way and that, but it only highlights your real inner beauty—who you are and what you’re made of.

So follow your unique grain that God put in you today as you make a life.

"What will you do when you see God?"

A five-year-old daughter told her Daddy one morning, “Daddy, I can’t wait to see God.”

“Okay,” the Daddy said. “But you’re not planning on going to see God anytime soon, are you?”

“Oh no sir,” she said. “It’ll be a long time before I see God. But I can’t wait.”

“Really? Why is that?” the Daddy asked.

“Because when I see God,” she said, “I’m going to run up and give God the biggest hug I’ve got.”

I like that! Most people I hear talking about meeting God say something like, “When I see God, I’m going to ask why my Mom had to die when I was so young.” Or, “why did I miscarry?” Or, “why didn’t you keep me from losing my job?” Or, “Why were mosquitoes and fleas necessary?”

I suspect when you see God, all of the things you wonder and worry about today just won’t matter. That you’ll be so overwhelmed by God’s love that, like this little girl, you’ll just run up and give God a hug.

"Did you watch the race at Fontana?"

NASCAR racing is so popular now. Hundreds of thousands of fans crowd into luxury boxes and “chicken bone” seats just to watch their favorite drivers go as fast as they can around oval tracks, yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs, cheering them on. The drivers are the real celebrities here, making millions of dollars not just running cars, but endorsing everything from soft drinks to motor oil.

Now while all of this high profile, big money activity is going on, down in the pits is a team of guys who aren’t asked to endorse anything. In fact, they’ll never get their faces on anybody’s box of cereal. But without this team of guys working together to change tires, fill gas tanks, make track bar adjustments, and clean windshields, the driver is dead on the track.

As it is with the driver, so it is with you. God has a team of people helping your life go around daily. So today, thank God for all the teams of people—at work, and home, and school; wherever they are—who keep you going. And thank your team as well as you listen to life and make a life, not just a living.
