"What's your grain?"

A friend of mine makes beautiful things out of wood. Now he can create furniture or build houses or decks or lay flooring.

He came to our home not so long ago to lay some flooring for us, but this wasn’t just any flooring. It’s some antique heart pine flooring. As he laid the flooring, he pointed out several things to me.

Like the grain of the wood. How the person who cut it knew just how the grain ran in this wood and so he milled it to run with the grain. Then sanded it just enough to bring out the beautiful grain. “Follow the grain,” my friend said, “and you find the real beauty in this wood.”

When he said that, I began to listen to life. You have a grain within you, just like this wood. Your grain runs a certain way and it’s different from anyone else’s. Life sands on you a bit along the years, rubbing you this way and that, but it only highlights your real inner beauty—who you are and what you’re made of.

So follow your unique grain that God put in you today as you make a life.
