"How’s your pace?"
As I travel and speak to business groups and associations, one of the most common questions I get is, "How do you write all of those stories?" These stories are on the radio and in newspapers across the U.S. and on our website which reaches hundreds of thousands of people in some 50 countries.
My usual response is something like, "Well, I listen to my life and that’s where the stories come from." Then lots of times there’s a follow-up question: "But how do you write so many?" And that’s a fair question since I write about 260 or so a year.
I always answer, "I write them one at a time."
You see, if I sat down in front of my blank computer screen with that constantly blinking cursor staring at me, and said, "I’ve got to write 260 stories" I’d never write the first one. I’d be paralyzed, frozen, by such a daunting task.
But just about everyday something happens around me and I jot myself a note about it. Later I sit down and write about that experience and it becomes a story.
Today, just listen to life for your story so you will make a life, not just a living.
